Mexico's tourism GDP rises 0.4% in the second quarter of 2026
Spending by foreign visitors in Mexico fell 13.4% from a year earlier, while spending by Mexican residents rose 3.2%.
Mexico's tourism GDP grew 0.4% in the second quarter of 2026 from the first and 0.8% from the same quarter of 2025, in real, seasonally adjusted terms, the national statistics agency INEGI reported on Wednesday in its quarterly tourism indicators.
The gain breaks a decline in the first quarter, when the measure fell 0.8%. Domestic tourism consumption, which tracks what visitors spend inside the country, barely moved: up 0.1% on the quarter and 0.4% on the year.
The split is in who is spending. Foreign visitors spent 13.4% less than in the second quarter of 2025, while Mexican residents traveling at home spent 3.2% more. The gap was wider in the first quarter, when foreigners spent 18.4% less than a year earlier and residents 5.4% more.
| Indicator | Q1 quarterly | Q2 quarterly | Q2 annual |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tourism GDP | -0.8 | 0.4 | 0.8 |
| Domestic tourism consumption | -0.7 | 0.1 | 0.4 |
| Spending by foreign visitors | -5.9 | 0.3 | -13.4 |
| Spending by residents | 0.5 | 0.0 | 3.2 |
Goods-producing tourism activities grew 3.3% on the quarter and 6.7% on the year. Services slipped 0.2% and 0.7%, respectively.
INEGI gives no reason for the drop in foreign spending, and its unadjusted figures are preliminary and may be revised. For hotels, transport and others that depend on international visitors, the 13.4% annual decline is the number that stands out.
The next release is due Feb. 10, 2027.
