Mexican peso closes at 18.50 per dollar as stocks slip 0.26 %
The peso lost 0.75 % on Oct. 14 after US inflation data raised bets on another Federal Reserve rate hike.
On Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026, the Mexican peso ended at 18.50 per dollar after losing 0.75 %, according to Milenio and Reuters (a figure from a note published at 15:38 Mexico City time). The FIX exchange rate, the reference that Banxico, Mexico's central bank, sets each business day, could not be confirmed on its site when this article was written.
The move followed the US consumer price index, which measures how the prices consumers pay change. In September 2026 it rose 3.7 % from a year earlier, with gasoline as the main driver, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. With prices rising, the Federal Reserve (Fed), the US central bank, is more likely to make credit more expensive, which draws capital toward the dollar. Milenio and Forbes México, both citing Reuters, report that traders strengthened their expectation of a rate increase when the Fed meets on Oct. 27 and 28; neither gives a probability.
Austan Goolsbee, president of the Chicago Fed, considers the September figures discouraging, according to Milenio.
During the session the peso touched 18.55 per dollar at 8:14, according to Forbes México, and 18.5690 (-1.1 %) at 10:55, according to Reforma. Both outlets describe that level as the weakest since November 2025.
On the stock market, the S&P/BMV IPC, the main index of the Mexican Stock Exchange, closed at 66 790.35 points, down 0.26 %, ending four straight sessions of gains, according to El CEO with data from the exchange. Among the companies that outlet cites, Megacable rose 3.26 % and Grupo Carso fell 6.57 %.
