Netflix renews A Different World for a second season
The sequel to the NBC classic premiered September 24 and already has a second year at Hillman College; Netflix has not set a return date.
*A Different World* will get a second year: Netflix confirmed the renewal on Friday, October 2, 2026, barely eight days after the series premiered, according to TVLine. The series revives the NBC comedy that aired from 1987 to 1993.
The new season will return to Hillman College with the students in their second year. Deborah Wayne, daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert-Wayne, remains the lead. Netflix has not given a premiere date or an episode count.
Creator and showrunner Felicia Pride welcomed the news in the statement TVLine quotes:
We are thrilled to go back to Hillman and keep telling meaningful stories that resonate across generations.
Executive producer Debbie Allen thanked the audience: the series, she said, brought "joy, romance, relevance, authenticity, and HEART," according to coverage of the renewal.
The speed is what stands out. Netflix decided after a single week in the catalog, and What's on Netflix reports that the series entered fourth place on Netflix's global English-language TV ranking, with 4.2 million views, and appeared in the Top 10 in 15 countries. The sources do not say which days that figure covers.
The young cast is led by Maleah Joi Moon as Deborah Wayne. Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy return as Dwayne and Whitley, and Cree Summer and Darryl M. Bell come back as well. Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood are also among the executive producers.
The title under which the new version will be known in Mexico is still unconfirmed; the original series was known there as *Un mundo diferente*.
