Supermassive lays off more than 70 after August consultation

Former employees say more than 70 people have left the studio behind Until Dawn; Supermassive has not published a final figure.

Supermassive Games, the British studio behind *Until Dawn* and *The Dark Pictures*, has laid off more than 70 people. Insider Gaming and Kotaku reported it on Monday, Oct. 5, citing former employees. One of them is Frank Tindle, who ran IT and facilities for 16 years and confirmed his exit on LinkedIn.

The figure does not come from a company statement. When Insider Gaming published, the studio had not commented on the end of the process, and both outlets rely on the same posts from former staff, so they are not independent confirmations.

The cuts close the consultation Supermassive opened on Aug. 11. At the time, the studio said it expected to lose "up to 75" colleagues, according to Game Informer. Insider Gaming counts developers, artists, producers, QA, operations and executives among those affected. The studio had more than 400 staff.

It is the third round in under three years: about 90 roles in February 2024 and around 36 in July 2025, per TBreak. Kotaku notes it comes less than six months after the launch of *Directive 8020*, the studio's latest game, released May 12 on Steam to mixed reviews.

The final headcount, and whether Supermassive will issue its own statement, remain to be seen.
