Ronaldo scores as Al Nassr win 3-1 after a Riyadh alert

Al Nassr beat Neftchi Fergana in the AFC Champions League Elite after an hour-long wait caused by a security alert in the Saudi capital.

Al Nassr, the Saudi club of Cristiano Ronaldo, beat Uzbekistan's Neftchi Fergana 3-1 on Monday in Riyadh, in the second round of the AFC Champions League Elite, Asia's top club competition. It is the team's first win in the tournament. Al Nassr had lost 0-4 to Al Ain in its debut on Sept. 15.

The match was scheduled to start at 21:15 local time, 12:15 in Mexico City, and began an hour late. According to Yahoo Sports, Saudi Arabia's alert system sent phones in the city a warning of a hostile aerial threat. ESPN reported that civil defense issued a security alert and that the Saudi-led coalition intercepted ballistic missiles fired by Yemen's Houthi rebels. The outlets disagree on how many: ESPN says two and Yahoo Sports says one.

The stadium announcer asked fans to stay in their seats, and there was no evacuation order. The game had been in doubt since the weekend, after an attack hit the capital's airport, according to The National. Neither the Asian Football Confederation nor the clubs had said at that point whether it would be played.

Ângelo Gabriel opened the scoring shortly after the half-hour mark, according to ESPN. Ronaldo doubled the lead just before halftime with his 981st goal as a professional. Alisher Odilov pulled one back for Neftchi in the second half, and an own goal by the Uzbek side made it 3-1.

The sources disagree on the exact minutes of the goals, and the AFC match report does not yet settle them.

The Asian Football Confederation had not made public its postponement policy for Saudi clubs. The next match in the region is Al Hilal's visit to Al Sadd in Doha on Tuesday.
