ChatGPT brings ads to 26 more countries, for a total of 89
Fourteen of the new markets are in Latin America, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru. Mexico has had the ads since August.
OpenAI has taken ChatGPT advertising to 26 more countries and now operates in 89, according to its Wednesday announcement. Fourteen of the new markets are in Latin America, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru, joining Mexico and Brazil.
Nothing changes for ChatGPT users in Mexico. The ads arrived there in August, as a pilot for users over 18 on the Free and Go plans. In the new countries, the rule is the same: people on the Free and Go plans see them, and those who pay for Plus, Pro or Enterprise do not. Advertisers buy through technology partners or on their own in Ads Manager, the company's campaign tool.
The figures come from the company itself: more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns on ChatGPT, and ChatGPT has more than 1,200 million weekly users. There is no independent measurement of either. The first counts anyone who has run any campaign, and it does not say how many advertise today or how much they spend.
On privacy, OpenAI maintains that the ads are labeled as sponsored and kept separate from answers, and that conversations are not shared with advertisers, who receive only general data such as views and clicks. What advertisers can do is upload customer lists to include or exclude people from a campaign.
OpenAI did not publish a country-by-country schedule: it speaks of availability starting with the announcement, with no launch date for each market. The format with image ads that it will test in the U.S. also has no date for Mexico.
