Grok Bot terms leave the cost of its purchases to the user
Musk promised on X that SpaceX would cover purchase errors, but the agent's published terms leave that out and allow storing credentials.
Elon Musk wrote on X on Oct. 15 that if Grok Bot makes a mistake with a purchase or leaks a card, "SpaceX will make you whole," according to The Next Web. The text SpaceXSI published on Oct. 12 in its Grok Bot Terms says something else: the customer is "solely responsible" for the charges and consequences of what the agent does.
For the user, the difference is who pays. Musk's line is a post with no defined scope: The Next Web notes he did not clarify what it covers and that SpaceX did not respond to Business Insider, the outlet that reported it first. The terms are the text a customer is bound by.
| Topic | What they establish | Section |
|---|---|---|
| Responsibility | The customer sets permissions, approval requirements and spending limits, and monitors unattended activity | 2.2 |
| Human review | They call for human review before actions such as financial transactions; approval controls do not reverse what is already done | 2.3 |
| Exclusion | The company is liable only if the loss stems from its gross negligence or willful misconduct | 2.4 |
| Stored data | In a persistent cloud environment, the agent can retain its files, browser sessions, credentials, memory and routines | 4 |
Section 2.4 adds that the customer is responsible for whatever the agent does even if nobody foresaw, anticipated or authorized it. And section 4 says that one user's agents share that cloud environment, and that deleting one may not delete what was stored.
Grok Bot is the agent from SpaceXSI, formerly xAI. What The Next Web reports about the product:
- Launch and price: it came out in August 2026 and is not on the free plan; it comes with the Premium tier of The X Subscription, at $30 a month, which launched on Oct. 12.
- Test order: Musk said five Lego sets costing $241.34 arrived.
- Amazon: a user said the store was blocking the agent and Musk replied that Grok "would find another way"; the outlet does not confirm that block.
None of the sources consulted says whether Grok Bot is sold in Mexico or on what terms, nor how Mexico's 2025 law on personal data held by private parties would govern the product. No refund policy was found in the Oct. 12 terms either, and it remains to be seen whether SpaceXSI will publish one. This newsroom could not open Musk's original post: The Next Web does not link to it.
