Spotify brings audiobooks to Mexico, 12 hours a month on Premium

Eligible Premium subscribers pay nothing extra, but the monthly cap is short. Anyone who wants more has to buy titles one by one or add a paid plan.

Spotify began opening its audiobook catalog in Mexico on Oct. 7. Eligible Premium subscribers get 12 hours a month included in their plan at no extra cost, according to Spotify.

Anyone who uses up that allowance has two options: buy individual titles or sign up for Audiobooks+, a monthly add-on. Spotify has not published the price and says it varies by market. Xataka México, a Mexican tech outlet, reports a monthly price in pesos for the country. That figure does not come from Spotify's announcement and is unconfirmed, so it is left out here.

Availability may differ from one account to another. TechCrunch says the rollout started on Oct. 7 and will continue over the coming months, while Xataka describes the service as live in Mexico since that day. Spotify also does not explain what "eligible" means, or whether Duo and Family plans get the same 12 hours.

Twelve hours does not go far: a long book can take up much of the monthly allowance, and the rest costs extra.

The expansion is global. The service grows from 22 markets to more than 180 before the end of 2026, and adds a catalog of more than 350 000 titles in more than 120 languages, according to the company. Owen Smith, Spotify's vice president of audiobooks, said books "change how we see the world."

The growth figures that accompany the announcement, more than one million Audiobooks+ subscribers and more than $100 million in annual recurring revenue, come from Spotify and have not been independently checked. It is also unconfirmed which publishers and Spanish-language titles will be in the Mexican catalog: Xataka names Planeta, Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial and the Fondo de Cultura Económica, and Spotify's announcement names none.
