Peso ends at 18.41 per dollar as Mexico's IPC gains 1.63 %

Banxico's FIX reference rate rose to 18.4163 pesos, 1.68 % higher than Thursday, while Mexico's stock index topped 66 000 points for the first time since Aug. 26.

Mexico's peso ended Friday, Oct. 9, 2026, at 18.41 per U.S. dollar, according to El Financiero, which attributes the figure to Banxico, the central bank, in a note published at 15:34 Mexico City time. That is 21 centavos more than Thursday's 18.20, a loss of 1.15 % for the currency.

The FIX, the reference exchange rate that Banxico calculates from wholesale-market quotes, was 18.4163 pesos, against 18.1128 on Thursday. The difference is 0.3035 pesos, or 1.68 % (our calculation from the central bank's two figures). It is the third straight rise in the FIX, which stood at 17.9670 on Tuesday, Oct. 6.

The S&P/BMV IPC, the main index of the Mexican Stock Exchange, gained 1.63 % and ended at 66 048.57 points, according to El CEO. It was the index's second straight gain, its first close above 66 000 points since Aug. 26, and its weekly advance reached 2.35 %. Among individual stocks, Grupo México rose 5.09 % to 242.10 pesos per share ($13, at 18.4163 pesos per dollar, Banxico's FIX of Oct. 9) and América Móvil fell 2.77 % to 19.64 pesos ($1.07), the index's biggest drop.

What analysts say

El Financiero explains the peso's weakness by a smaller interest-rate gap between Mexico and the United States, an appetite for risky assets and a higher perceived risk for Mexico, tied to a projected fiscal deficit that worries rating agencies. Gabriela Siller, head of economic analysis at Banco Base, warned, according to that outlet, that the gap could hit a record low of 200 basis points (2 percentage points) in a scenario with a Banxico cut and a Federal Reserve hike before the end of the year. It is a Banco Base hypothesis, and these causes were not confirmed with a primary source.
