Sheinbaum wants lower tariffs on autos and steel after meeting
The president said a meeting with business leaders and the US ambassador was meant to address their requests; she gave no figures and announced no investments.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said at her Oct. 9, 2026 morning press conference that her government wants "tariffs on autos and steel to come down," according to the Presidency's official transcript. The transcript of that remark does not say whom the request is addressed to, nor does it propose a date or a specific negotiation.
A reporter asked her about a meeting with business leaders that he placed on the previous day. Sheinbaum described it as "a meeting with business leaders at which the ambassador was present," referring to the U.S. ambassador. According to her, the meeting addressed the companies' requests and explained the Revenue Law (Ley de Ingresos) to them; she also said it was "related to trade and to a favorable climate for investment."
The same reporter said Altagracia Gómez spoke of "some investments being announced" and that the head of the Business Coordinating Council (CCE), Mexico's main business lobby, called the dialogue "a show of confidence." Those are the reporter's words: the president did not confirm them. On investments, she answered that she will report them "one by one" and gave no figures or company names.
The conference offered no figures on tariffs or investment, and did not detail who attended the meeting. The president did not give the date of the meeting either.
Still pending are the investment announcements Sheinbaum said she will make individually and the date of the separate meeting with the ambassador that she mentioned, for which she gave no day.
