GameStop prices a used PS5 Pro $500 above a new one

The retailer lists the secondhand console at $1,399.99, and an unconfirmed memo says the price is intentional.

GameStop, the U.S. video game retailer, is charging more for a used PS5 Pro than for a new one. On its store listing, checked on Oct. 6, the secondhand digital edition costs $1,399.99 and the disc-drive model costs $1,499.99.

Sony's price for the new console is $899.99 without a disc drive and $999.99 with one, according to GameRant. Against each, the used unit costs $500 more.

A memo the company has not confirmed

The FPS Review reproduces an internal memo attributed to GameStop, leaked by an employee, saying the used console will cost more than the new one and that "this is intentional." The company has not confirmed the document is authentic. Kotaku asked for comment and had received no reply when it published.

What the media say

The explanation comes from the press, not from GameStop or Sony. Outlets covering the story tie it to demand for the console ahead of the launch of GTA VI, expected on Nov. 19, and to a shortage of new units.

BGR adds the pricing history: Sony raised the PS5 Pro from $699.99 in November 2024 to $749.99 in August 2025 and to $899.99 in April 2026. According to the same outlet, the used console cost $807.49 in April.

Anyone looking for the console before GTA VI finds, for now, that buying new wherever stock exists is cheaper than GameStop's used unit. There is no price in Mexican pesos, and it is not confirmed that the charge applies in Mexico. It is also unclear whether the used units are in stock or only listed.
