Mexico says Inés "N", wanted at home, was detained in Miami
The attorney general's office gave no surname. Federal sources say she is TV host Inés Gómez Mont, and extradition has not been addressed.
Mexico's attorney general's office said Friday that a woman identified only as Inés "N" was detained in Miami, Florida. The arrest followed an exchange of information with the U.S. government, the office, known as the FGR, said on X.
A warrant for her arrest is in force in Mexico on a charge of tax fraud, the FGR said, and it attributes "probable participation" to her. The post carries an image with her eyes covered and a notice, citing Article 13 of the national criminal procedure code, that she is presumed innocent.
The post gives no surname. Federal sources say she is TV host Inés Gómez Mont, whose case has been public since 2021 and who was sought along with her husband, Víctor Manuel Álvarez Puga.
Who made the arrest, and her legal status in the United States, were not specified. Nor did the FGR say whether Mexico will ask for her extradition or her return. Her lawyers had not given their account.
A month ago, at her Sept. 30 morning press conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum said Interpol had dropped its red notice against the couple. She said her government would ask for it to be reinstated and that the Mexican warrants remained in force, as we reported that day. The couple's lawyers later argued before Interpol that the case is politically motivated.
The only offense mentioned today is tax fraud. Whether the United States keeps her in custody, Mexico files a formal extradition request or an immigration case opens will decide when, and if, she answers the Mexican warrant.
