FIFA picks U.S. to host first Women's Club World Cup
It will be played Jan. 5 to 30, 2028, with 19 teams and América Femenil already in as the only Mexican club.
FIFA has chosen the United States to host the first Women's Club World Cup, to be played Jan. 5 to 30, 2028, according to Thursday's announcement.
Sarai Bareman, who heads FIFA's women's football division, said there was a "thorough evaluation" to choose the host. The United States came out as the best-prepared country.
Nineteen clubs from the six confederations will take part, and a playoff will bring the field down to 16. UEFA has six berths; Asia, Africa, Concacaf and South America, three each; Oceania, one. Spots are earned in each confederation's top club competition, with results from seasons ending between 2024 and 2027.
Seven clubs have already qualified:
| Club | Country |
|---|---|
| Barcelona Femení | Spain |
| Arsenal Women | England |
| Club América Femenil | Mexico |
| Gotham FC | United States |
| Naegohyang Women's FC | North Korea |
| Corinthians | Brazil |
| Wuhan Jiangda WFC | China |
América Femenil is the only Mexican club on the list. Concacaf, the governing body for North and Central America and the Caribbean, has three berths, and two are already taken: América and Gotham FC, of the United States.
FIFA has not yet said which cities or stadiums will host the matches, and the other twelve spots remain to be decided.
