Mexico rallies past Chile 3-1 at the Under-17 Women's World Cup
El Tri's U-17 side equalized before halftime and took the lead in the second half; Sunday's match against Australia decides whether it advances.
Mexico beat Chile 3-1 on Thursday in its second Group F match at the Women's Under-17 World Cup in Rabat, Morocco. The Mexicans trailed from the 12th minute and needed a win to stay alive.
Catalina Muñoz put Chile ahead in that 12th minute, and Mía Urbano equalized in the 35th, still in the first half. The turnaround came after the break: Citlalli Reyes made it 2-1 in the 65th, a goal the VAR checked before it stood, and Nicole Jiménez sealed it in the 83rd on the counterattack.
They are Mexico's first three points of the tournament.
The team had lost 2-0 to Spain in its opener on Monday, which left it at the bottom of the group. Chile, which tied Australia 1-1 in its first game, has one point.
| Team | P | Pts |
|---|---|---|
| Spain | 2 | 6 |
| Mexico | 2 | 3 |
| Chile | 2 | 1 |
| Australia | 2 | 1 |
The top two teams in each group advance to the first knockout round, along with the four best third-place finishers. Mexico is third with three points, but whether that is enough depends on the other groups.
That is why Sunday matters: Mexico closes the group stage against Australia, and a win would give it the best shot at staying in Morocco.
