Giants and Commanders Tie 27-27 After a Sloppy Overtime

New York erased a 14-point deficit, but a Skattebo fumble and a Washington final play that never got off in time ended in the NFL's first tie of the year.

The New York Giants and the Washington Commanders tied 27-27 on Sunday in Week 5 of the NFL, after an overtime played in Landover, Maryland. Fox Sports lists it as the first tie of the season.

Two rushing touchdowns by Jayden Daniels put Washington up 27-13 in the fourth quarter. Jameis Winston, New York's quarterback, answered with three touchdown passes, two to Isaiah Likely and the last to Malik Nabers with less than two minutes left, according to Sports Illustrated. The Commanders punted on their final drive and the game went to overtime.

In the extra period, Winston drove the Giants 39 yards, but Dominic Zvada missed a 46-yard field goal. After a punt, the Giants moved to the Washington 24-yard line with a first down. Then Cam Skattebo fumbled after a hit from Dyami Brown, and Shy Tuttle recovered it.

Washington answered with short passes that brought it into field goal range, with no timeouts left. With less than ten seconds to play, Daniels called a pass play instead of spiking the ball to stop the clock, and time ran out, according to Touchdown Wire. Sports Illustrated, by contrast, credits the ending to a sack by Tremaine Edmunds on Daniels at the Giants' 24-yard line. The two accounts differ on the detail of that play. The NFL's official account wrote that the Commanders could not get the play off in time and that the game would end in a tie.
