Gemini comes to Android Auto with access to Gmail and Calendar

Personal Intelligence is optional, requires a personal Google account and leaves out Europe, the UK and Nigeria. Mexico is not among the exclusions.

Google began rolling out Personal Intelligence on Android Auto on Tuesday, the feature that lets Gemini consult your Google apps to answer questions while you drive. In cars with Google built in, the system that comes preinstalled in the vehicle, it will arrive "in the coming months", with no date or list of models.

If the user allows it, a single Gemini answer can combine data from Gmail, Calendar, Photos, Maps, YouTube and Search. Google illustrates it with cases such as asking for a boarding gate and whether the flight is on time, asking for directions to a calendar appointment, or finding restaurants along the route that fit the user's diet.

The assistant will no longer be limited to general questions. The feature already exists on phones: Google launched it in Mexico on April 14 for the Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra plans. Mexico is not among the markets excluded from the in-car rollout (the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Nigeria), but Google does not name the country or say in which languages it will work. Nor does it say whether the car version will still require a paid plan.

Google requires a personal account, so Workspace accounts (businesses, schools and organizations) are left out, and the user must be at least 18.

Nothing connects by default. The user turns it on in Gemini's settings, chooses which apps to link and can switch it off entirely. "Your apps don't connect until you decide to turn it on," Google says. When the system is the car itself, Google limits those answers to the phone linked inside the vehicle. Without the feature, navigation, music, calls and general questions keep working.

None of this has been tested independently: the examples are Google's, and the rollout is gradual, so not every user will see it today.
