Magnitude 5.6 earthquake shakes Chaparral, Colombia
Colombia's geological survey put the quake 19 kilometers deep and logged more than 4,500 reports from people who felt it.
A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck Chaparral, a town in southern Tolima, at 4:13 a.m. Tuesday local time, the Servicio Geológico Colombiano, Colombia's national geological survey, reported.
The quake was shallow, about 19 kilometers (12 miles) deep. More than 4,500 people told the survey they felt it. Its statement does not mention damage or casualties.
Carolina García Londoño, the survey's technical director for geohazards, noted that Tolima is crossed by several active faults capable of producing this kind of activity.
Chaparral has registered other tremors in recent weeks. The country has not stopped feeling aftershocks and new quakes since Aug. 10, when a magnitude 7.4 earthquake hit San José del Palmar, in Chocó.
The survey will keep monitoring and publish new data. It asked the public to rely only on its official channels for updates.
