Greta Gerwig's Narnia gets its first trailer from Netflix

The film opens in theaters Feb. 12, 2027 and arrives on Netflix April 2; Gerwig showed first footage at an IMAX screening in New York.

The first trailer for Narnia: The Magician's Nephew, the Netflix film directed by Greta Gerwig, came out on Oct. 13. According to AP, Gerwig had earlier shown footage from the shoot on an IMAX screen at the AMC Lincoln Center in New York, where she talked with Stephen Colbert, and the preview was also posted online.

The film is a prequel to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and adapts the 1955 novel by C. S. Lewis, according to Milenio, a Mexican news outlet. It opens in theaters on Feb. 12, 2027 and moves to Netflix on April 2 of that year. Milenio gives the same dates for Latin America.

The sources differ on one point. TheWrap and Milenio mention IMAX screenings starting Feb. 10; AP does not confirm them.

What the preview shows

AP reports that the trailer uses "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin and that the film's budget is $280 million. The leads are two newcomers: David McKenna as Digory Kirke and Beatrice Campbell as Polly Plummer. Milenio adds Daniel Craig as Andrew Ketterley and Emma Mackey as Jadis, the White Witch. Carey Mulligan, as Flora Kirke, Ciarán Hinds and Meryl Streep, the voice of Aslan, also appear.

It is Gerwig's first project since Barbie. She said at the event that she told Ted Sarandos, Netflix's co-CEO, that she only knows how to make films for the big screen, and that he asked her to make a movie for the biggest screen she could imagine.

For viewers who plan to watch at home, the gap between theaters and Netflix is under two months. The exact date for Mexico and the IMAX screenings are still to be confirmed with Netflix or theater chains.
