Street Fighter opens in first place with $51 million worldwide
The Capcom video game adaptation took in $31 million in North America and about $20 million abroad, close to what was projected.
Street Fighter opened in first place at the box office the weekend of Oct. 16-18. The live-action adaptation of Capcom's video game took in $31 million in the United States and Canada and another $20.1 million overseas, Sunday studio estimates show, for $51.1 million worldwide.
Paramount distributes the film, which Legendary produced with Capcom. It played in 3 575 North American theaters, averaging about $8 671 per theater, and beat Whalefall ($17.5 million in its debut) and You Can See Everything (about $15 million). Andrew Koji plays Ryu, Noah Centineo is Ken and Callina Liang is Chun-Li.
Projections before the release put it at about $30 million in North America. The result landed almost exactly there: it won the weekend but did not beat expectations.
| Film | North American opening ($ millions) |
|---|---|
| Street Fighter | 31.0 |
| Whalefall | 17.5 |
| You Can See Everything | 15.0 |
Cost matters in reading the number. TheWrap puts the budget at $82 million, calls the start "middling" and reports a B- CinemaScore, the grade audiences gave as they left theaters. Other sources only place the budget below $100 million.
The figures are Sunday estimates and may move when the studio publishes actuals. The second weekend's drop will show whether the film holds up at the box office.
