GameSpot gives Modern Warfare 4's campaign a 7 out of 10

The first campaign reviews landed a week before the Oct. 23 launch. Most outlets have not scored it yet, and several praise the South Korean squad.

Reviews of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 campaign are out, a week before the full launch on Oct. 23 on PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo consoles and PC. According to a GamerFuzion roundup, the only numeric score so far is GameSpot's: 7 out of 10, played on PC.

GameSpot sees the two storylines as well woven together and calls it the series' best campaign since 2019's Modern Warfare. Its complaint is that it adds little that is new. IGN, GamesRadar+, PC Gamer and GamingTrend posted text without a score, some as reviews in progress, so Metacritic has no average yet.

The praise and the complaints overlap across outlets. PC Gamer says the half of the story with Captain Price is less interesting than the South Korean squad's. GamesBeat says it would give the campaign 4.5 out of 5 but is saving the overall score for later, and that the open-map mission Stranded slows the pace. GamesRadar+ warns that rigid mission design and restrictions threaten to spoil the fun. Several note that Mads Mikkelsen barely appears: GamingTrend puts his screen time at 10 to 15 minutes.

IGN, for its part, introduced its review on X with this line:

"At least Modern Warfare is going out on a high note."

On Switch 2, Nintendo Life published impressions without a score: no major frame drops, but weaker texturing and a lower frame rate than on PC.

A note on sourcing: the GameSpot, IGN, PC Gamer and GamesRadar+ pages could not be opened in full, and the scores and verdicts cited here come from GamerFuzion's roundup. GamerFuzion adds that GameSpot's reviewer traveled to an Activision event with transport and lodging paid for by the company. Final scores and multiplayer reviews are still to come.
