Gears of War: E-Day on PC requires ray tracing and 115 GB

Steam's listing demands a GPU with hardware ray tracing; it costs 1,399 pesos on Steam Mexico, and reviewers say the Steam Deck cannot run it.

Before buying Gears of War: E-Day on PC, check your graphics card. Steam's listing is blunt: the game, which The Coalition released on Oct. 6 with Xbox Game Studios as publisher, needs a GPU with hardware ray tracing, an SSD and 115 GB of free space.

On Steam Mexico the standard edition costs 1,399 pesos and the Premium Edition 1,999 pesos. Those are the store's prices as of Oct. 10 and can change.

If a card has no hardware ray tracing, the game cannot run: the listing offers no mode without it. On compatible hardware it supports DLSS 4.5, FSR "Redstone" and frame generation, plus 4K with HDR10. It uses Easy Anti-Cheat.

What about the Steam Deck

The listing says the game is optimized for the Steam Deck, Xbox Ally X and Xbox Ally. Independent reviews disagree about the Deck. Steam Deck HQ gave it 2 out of 5 and measured frequent drops below 30 frames per second even at the lowest settings, with 2 to 2.5 hours of battery life.

Its author, Noah Kupetsky, was blunt: "I don't recommend playing it on the Deck at all." According to Nerdzap, TechPowerUp reached the same conclusion and blames the Deck's four-core CPU; Nerdzap adds that Steam lists its compatibility as "Unknown". Newer Windows handhelds fare better, and the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ stood out among the five TechPowerUp tested. Its figures could not be checked directly, so they are not reproduced here.

Those tests date from Oct. 1, with early access, and a patch could change them. What critics said about the game itself is in another story. For anyone who pre-ordered, Nerdzap says Steam refunds the game until Oct. 20 if it has under two hours played, and that early access counts. That deadline is not confirmed in Steam's own policy.
