Megascans is free again and now allows AI training
Quixel is putting its whole library on Fab at no cost and changing its terms to allow AI models. Buyers since 2025 get Epic credit back.
Megascans, Epic Games' library of 3D scans, is free again in full on Fab, the company's content marketplace. Quixel, the Epic studio that makes the scans, announced it Thursday along with a change to the license.
The rollout is gradual. Unreal Engine said on X that Fab listings will update through Nov. 12, so some assets may not show up as free yet.
The second part changes the rules. Quixel renewed the terms on all of its assets, and developers can now use Megascans and Megaplants to train artificial intelligence models. Epic summed it up this way:
We've changed the terms on all Quixel assets: you can now use them to train AI models with Megascans and Megaplants.
Anyone who bought Megascans or a Quixel Bundle on or after Jan. 1, 2025 gets a refund as credit on their Epic account, which works across Epic products, beyond Fab. They keep their license and gain the new AI rights. The process is to sign in to the Epic account and accept the new terms. The money will appear in late 2026, Quixel says.
Studio licenses remain governed by their contracts.
For small and independent studios working in Unreal Engine or other engines, a free library of photorealistic scans lowers the cost of making a game. The announcement does not spell out the limits of the AI permission, such as commercial use of the trained models.
Fab listings finish updating Nov. 12.
