Mexico women lose 4-3 to Jamaica in Aguascalientes

Jamaica led 2-0 inside 20 minutes and Mexico could not complete the comeback; the rematch is Tuesday, Oct. 13, in Querétaro.

Mexico's women's national team lost 4-3 to Jamaica on Friday, Oct. 9, at Estadio Victoria in Aguascalientes. It was the first of two preparation matches in the FIFA window, according to Mediotiempo and Récord, two Mexican sports outlets.

Jamaica went up 2-0 before the 20th minute: Jody Brown and Khadija Shaw scored on counterattacks that exploited defensive mistakes by Mexico, according to Excélsior. Jacqueline Ovalle pulled one back with a free kick that no one touched before it went in. Deneisha Blackwood restored the two-goal lead from the penalty spot, after a foul by Rebeca Bernal on Shaw inside the area that Excélsior says was called after a VAR review.

Bernal answered before halftime, heading in a cross from Alice Soto to make it 3-2 to Jamaica. In the second half, with Mexico pushing for the equalizer, Solai Washington scored Jamaica's fourth near the end of regulation. In stoppage time, Charlyn Corral made it 4-3 with a long-range shot, and according to Récord the crowd chanted "¡Sí se puede!", Spanish for "Yes we can".

The outlets differ by up to a minute on several goals, and none consulted the official Mexican Football Federation match report, so the times in the table are approximate. Mediotiempo calls the defeat the first for coach Pedro López at home with the women's national team. None of the three sources includes comments from the players or the coaching staff.

The rematch is Tuesday, Oct. 13, at Estadio Corregidora in Querétaro, the last tune-up before the Concacaf W Championship.
