Hurricane Vance stays at sea off Guerrero as a Category 2

Heavy rain and waves of 2 to 3 meters (7 to 10 feet) are forecast for the Guerrero coast; the storm could strengthen to Category 3 on Saturday.

Hurricane Vance strengthened to Category 2 on Friday, but its center remains over open water: at 3 p.m., Mexico's National Meteorological Service (SMN) placed it 685 kilometers (426 miles) south-southwest of Acapulco and 895 kilometers (556 miles) south-southeast of Manzanillo, Colima.

The forecast track keeps it at sea.

The storm is moving northwest at 7 km/h (4 mph), with sustained winds of 165 km/h (103 mph) and gusts of 205 km/h (127 mph). Even without landfall, its cloud bands will bring heavy, scattered rain to the coast of Guerrero and to central, western and southwestern Michoacán, along with showers in Oaxaca.

Waves of 2 to 3 meters (7 to 10 feet) are expected along the Guerrero coast. For Acapulco and the rest of the shoreline, the immediate effect is rain and rough seas, not destructive wind.

Vance formed Wednesday as a tropical storm, 835 kilometers (519 miles) south of Acapulco, and became a hurricane two days later. The U.S. National Hurricane Center is tracking it in the eastern Pacific.

The SMN expects it to reach Category 3 in the early hours of Saturday, Oct. 24, and to weaken to Category 2 again on Sunday, Oct. 25.
