Soderbergh to finish filming The Batman Part II

Warner Bros. says Matt Reeves is away for a family matter and will return for post-production; the release date is still February 2028.

Steven Soderbergh will take over the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman Part II. Warner Bros. announced it on Oct. 15, according to the statement reproduced by TheWrap, because Matt Reeves, who wrote and is directing the film, is dealing with "an ongoing family matter."

Reeves will not be on set during that stretch, although he and Soderbergh will stay in touch through the last days of filming. The studio says Reeves will rejoin the project in post-production and that Soderbergh is stepping in with the full support of DC Studios. Neither the statement nor the sources give more detail about the family matter, and this article does not speculate about it.

Soderbergh described the goal himself: to generate material that fits with what has already been shot so Reeves can finish his film. Of Reeves's work on the first film, he told TheWrap it is "intentional, specific and rigorously coherent."

What is known and what is not

Reeves's absence was not entirely new: /Film reported on Oct. 6 that the director had to step away from the production for personal reasons. What changes now is that there is a named replacement to close out the shoot.

The film continues the story of The Batman (2022), which Reeves also directed, and is in production with DC Studios. TheWrap gives Feb. 18, 2028, as the release date, and nothing so far indicates it will change.

Still unanswered are the exact dates of the remaining weeks of filming and whether the film's schedule shifts. Neither Warner Bros. nor DC Studios has published them.
