Hellraiser: Revival splits critics, from 4.5 to 8 out of 10

Saber Interactive's survival horror scores 73 on OpenCritic and 69 on Metacritic for PS5. Reviewers praise Pinhead and clash over technical bugs.

Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival came out Oct. 8 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2, and critics are far from agreed. OpenCritic averages it at 73 out of 100, with 60% of critics recommending it across 48 reviews. On Metacritic, the PS5 version stands at 69 from 34 reviews, PC at 75 from 23 and Xbox Series X at 71 from 7. The Switch 2 version has no score yet, with two reviews. The figures are from Oct. 9 and shift as more reviews arrive.

The gap between outlets is wide. Game Informer gave it 4.5 out of 10 after playing on PS5; reviewer Marcus Stewart points to a "litany of bugs" that sinks a horror game that would otherwise be middling at best. Screen Rant gave it 8 out of 10.

What gets praised: an atmosphere that respects the films, the Labyrinth and Doug Bradley back as Pinhead. Cameron Swan, writing for Game Rant, calls it "incredibly authentic to the original Hellraiser," but faults the bosses and the visual and audio glitches. The harshest reviews point to weightless combat, weak enemy AI and an unbalanced resource economy.

Screen Rant compares the 69 on Metacritic with other horror licenses: Halloween: The Game sits at 65 and 2023's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre at 72. It also notes that updates could fix some of the gameplay problems.

On Steam in Mexico, the standard edition costs $29 (529.99 pesos, at 18.42 pesos per dollar, Banxico's Oct. 9 FIX).

On PC, the minimum is a GTX 1660 or RX Vega 64, 8 GB of RAM and 80 GB of free space.

Game Informer and Game Rant played on PS5, the platform with the lowest Metascore, though the samples per platform are small. As of Oct. 9 there is no statement from Saber Interactive about a launch patch, so the scores may move in the coming days.
