Mexico U-17 women beat Australia, will face Nigeria
Citlali Reyes scored in the 35th minute, sending El Tri into the knockout stage at the Women's U-17 World Cup in Morocco as Group F runner-up.
Mexico beat Australia 1-0 on Sunday in Rabat and advanced to the knockout rounds at the Women's U-17 World Cup. Citlali Reyes scored the only goal in the 35th minute.
She finished with her right foot into the bottom right corner after a pass from Natalia Pérez, according to the regional confederation's match report. The match was played at the Mohammed VI complex in Morocco's capital.
Mexico ended second in Group F with six points, behind Spain.
It was not a straight path. Mexico opened with a 2-0 loss to Spain, then won twice in a row: a 3-1 comeback against Chile on Thursday, and this one. Reyes, who also scored against Chile, now has two goals in the tournament.
The top two teams in each group and the four best third-place teams reach the next round. Finishing second means Mexico no longer has to wait on results elsewhere.
The knockout opponent is Nigeria on Thursday, Oct. 29. The winner moves on to the quarterfinals.
