Vasco beats Boca 1-0 at La Bombonera in Sudamericana semifinal
Adson scored in the 24th minute and Boca, unbeaten in 17 matches before this, must win by two goals on Oct. 20 to avoid penalties.
Vasco da Gama of Brazil beat Argentina's Boca Juniors 1-0 at La Bombonera and takes an advantage into the second leg of the Copa Sudamericana semifinals, South America's second-biggest club competition. The first leg was played Tuesday night, Oct. 13, according to Cadena 3.
The only goal came in the 24th minute of the first half. Andrés Gómez sent in a cross and Adson headed it past goalkeeper Álvaro Montero, according to El Universal.
The match changed in the second half. Gómez picked up a second yellow card and was sent off around the 63rd minute; Cadena 3 puts it a minute later. Vasco finished with ten men, but Boca could not find an equalizer despite chances for Miguel Merentiel and Enner Valencia.
Chile's Piero Maza refereed. The defeat ended a 17-match unbeaten run for Boca, according to Cadena 3.
The series ends Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 21:30 in Argentina, 18:30 in Mexico City. Boca needs to win by two goals or more to advance, because according to Cadena 3 a 1-0 win would send the tie to penalties.
The venue is still unconfirmed. Cadena 3 says CONMEBOL, South America's football confederation, has not decided whether it will be the Maracanã, as Vasco asked, or Asunción. A court in Rio ordered on Oct. 9 that the Maracanã be made available for the match, according to Diario Panorama.
