Hurricane Otis film Contra el huracán arrives on Netflix today

Jorge Michel Grau's film, based on two young people who survived Otis aboard a yacht, moves from theaters to the platform on Oct. 23.

*Contra el huracán* ("Against the Hurricane"), Jorge Michel Grau's film inspired by Hurricane Otis, premieres today on Netflix, which presents it as a story based on real events.

It reaches the platform eight days after opening in theaters on Oct. 15 in eight cities: Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Puebla, Colima, Culiacán, Mérida and Torreón. Viewers outside those cities can watch it at home starting today.

In the fiction, Wirpul (Benny Emmanuel) is an inexperienced yacht captain and Candi (Kristyan Ferrer) is his half brother. The storm catches them without an engine or communications as Otis grows to Category 5, the intensity at which it made landfall in Acapulco on Oct. 25, 2023.

The starting point is a report in *El País* about Marlon Valdez and Jonathan Chino, who watched over their employer's yachts in Acapulco and survived Otis aboard one. The two advised on the film, and the team also consulted other survivors, Civil Protection, the Navy and specialists from the National Meteorological Service.

It was shot in Acapulco and at Churubusco Studios. Netflix and Perro Azul produced it, in co-production with LACOproductora.
